At the end of the road, I saw a battered tower. It was the bell tower of St. William's Cathedral in Laoag. The city of Laoag has prospered since the Spanish colonial period, and many of the old buildings from that time remain and are now tourist attractions. St. William's Cathedral is one of such buildings.
The outer wall of the bell tower was in shambles and looked like it was about to collapse. Nevertheless, the bell tower has the resilience to have withstood several earthquakes in the past. The fact that the outer walls are in shambles may be a sign that it has withstood earthquakes. On the other hand, while the tower itself has withstood earthquakes, the foundation does not seem to be as strong. The tower was not able to withstand the weight of the earthquake, and the bell tower is slowly sinking.
