26 statues line up on the wall. This monument is dedicated to The 26 Martyrs of Japan. 26 Christians, including 20 Japanese, 4 Spanish, 1 Mexican and 1 Portuguese were executed in 1597 by the order of Hideyoshi Toyotomi because Christianity was illegal in Japan at that time.
It was said that it was the first execution in this country ordered by the authority. After that, Christians in this country went underground and became 'Hidden Christian'. They were canonized by the Roman Catholic Church in 1862.
