Most of the people working at the open-air market open their stores and stay there to do their business. They have trays and baskets to put their goods in front of their stores. Under these circumstances, it is not so easy to move even if they want to change the place where they do business.
In contrast to these people, there are those who move lightly through the open-air market as they do their business. They are peddlers carrying a carrying pole. After doing business at one open-air market, they may move to another open-air market to do business again. For better or for worse, the vendors with their poles are not restricted by their location.
When I was walking through an open-air market in the center of Yangon, a young man carrying a carrying pole came from the other side. He seemed to be selling fried food called a-kyaw. Attached to both ends of the pole were blue baskets, in which the a-kyaw were lined up. A closer look reveals that the young man is not only carrying goods. An umbrella is also hung next to the basket behind him. He is selling while carrying a set of tools necessary for his work.
