I was wandering around the precincts of Taiwan's City God Temple. The city god enshrined here is a local guardian deity as well as a god who is believed to control the afterlife. He is believed to bring good health and prosperous business, and is visited by worshippers. Although there are many temples in Tainan, I wondered if it is not the worshippers who come to the temple in search of benefits but the gods themselves that are enshrined there that make business prosperous.
The temple grounds were quiet. Even here, I could see a few worshippers here and there. A large incense burner placed in a secluded spot caught my eye. However, there was no one around and no sign of smoke rising from the censer. There are several incense burners scattered around the temple, so there must not be many people praying here.
As I stared at the incense burners, I saw a man's figure over there. He was walking through a round hole. In his hand was a plastic basin, in which I could see a medicine can. I didn't know where the man was headed, but there was a strange calmness to his movements. It seemed to blend perfectly with the serenity of the temple.
