Observing how goods are transported in the wholesale district, one can see a variety of human-powered ingenuity. There is no sign of mechanization here, and forklifts do not exist. Everything is done by hand. The most common type of cart is the dolly. The sight of multiple loads stacked on top of each other and transported appears to be an efficient and universal means of transportation.
The next most prominent method is the use of large baskets. Many people fill the baskets with loads and carry them while balancing them on their heads. This scene seems to me to be a very unique Indian gesture. There are also simpler methods, such as carrying the load on the shoulders or directly on the head like the man in the photo. This method of carrying without any tools is probably the most primitive, but in a sense it requires a highly developed sense of balance.
While there may be certain types of loads and situations that are suitable for each method of transport, to the untrained eye, the use of a dolly seems to be the easiest way to carry any load. Nevertheless, there are probably efficiencies and rules of thumb that apply only on the spot to the work here. Even in the simple choice of tools, there may be hidden reasons unique to this city.
