The last mile in logistics networks is often discussed in Japan, but the solution to the last mile in Mumbai, India's largest commercial capital, is surprisingly simple. It is to βtransport by human power. It boils down to this.
A walk through Mumbai's wholesale district reveals no forklifts or motorized carts. Nor are the turret trucks often seen in the markets in use. Instead, the streets are filled with people carrying goods directly on their shoulders or heads, using manual carts or sometimes even without carts.
These scenes seem to symbolize the underlying forces behind Mumbai's logistics. Unlike other cities, where efficiency and automation are the order of the day, here human labor carries the last bit of the load. Their labor, along with their sweat, exudes a deep-seated resilience.
