Entering Shuri Castle and walking up the hill towards the main hall, a gate came into view. It is the Shureimon Gate. It seems to have come to be called so because of the words "Shurei-no-ho" written on the oblong plaque, and is said to be the equivalent of the main gate in mainland castles.
Originally built in the 16th century, it was destroyed by fire during the Battle of Okinawa during World War II. The area around Shuri Castle was a fierce battleground. The current gate was rebuilt after the war. Although it has been rebuilt, it is a reminder of the prosperity of the Ryukyu dynasty in the past.
