The name "Ginza" comes from the fact that Tokugawa Ieyasu, who established the Edo shogunate, moved the silver coin mint from Sunpu to this area. The monetary system established by the Edo shogunate after the unification of Japan was a three-currency system consisting of gold, silver, and copper, and Ginza was where the silver coins were minted. This means that in addition to Ginza, there were also Kinza (gold coin mint) and Zeniza (copper coin mint). However, neither the name "Kinza" nor "Zeniza" has ever been heard of in Tokyo. Unlike Ginza, Kinza and Zeniza seem not to have had their histories inscribed in the place names.

In Edo, Zeniza were located in Kameido, Fukagawa and other locations, and it is said that they minted Kan'ei Tsuho coins. In contrast, there was only one Kinza in Edo that minted gold coins. The only other gold mint in Edo was in Hongokucho, where the office of the kin-aratame-yaku was located. What is interesting is that the site of the former Kinza still plays an important role in the financial world. The site of the former Kinza is now the head office of the Bank of Japan. In contrast to Ginza, where the name of the place has been retained even though its role has ended, Kinza continues to play a major role in "price stability" and "stability of the financial system," even though the name of the place has not been retained.
