There is a gallery located much closer to Shimbashi Station than Ginza Station, and one wonders if it can be called Ginza. It is Creation Gallery G8, run by Recruit Holdings Co. The gallery has many exhibitions related to graphic design and visual communication, and on display that day was the work of Takuya Onuki, a creative designer.
Without any prior knowledge, I stepped into the gallery and was immediately surrounded by monochrome photographs. On every wall was the same picture of a snow globe with a white dove inside and black snowflakes dancing in the air. The only difference was the amount of black snow fluttering inside the snow globe. Some of the snowflakes were so thick that the dove could not be seen, while others were hardly fluttering at all, but the basic composition of all the photos was the same.
Although it was not clear from just looking at the works, I was told that the series of works using snow domes with dancing black snow were posters and related artworks that appealed for peace, using the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima as a motif. The black snow reminds me of the black rain that fell immediately after the atomic bombing, and the dove is associated with the image of peace. Surprisingly, the image of the dove as a symbol of peace did not become popular around the world until much later. If it is true that Picasso's 1949 poster for the First World Congress of Partisans of Peace was the catalyst, it was only about 80 years ago.
