The Nissan Motor showroom, located at the Ginza 4-chome intersection, sometimes displays the latest automobiles made with the best of cutting-edge technology, and sometimes displays nostalgic classic cars. The showrooms are made of glass and are clearly visible from the sidewalk, and many people stop on the sidewalk to take a peek inside.
The fact that a showroom of a domestic automaker is located at the Ginza 4-chome intersection in the middle of Japan's busiest shopping district is proof that automakers play an important role in the Japanese economy. Indeed, many of the companies that line the Ginza 4-chome intersection are representative of Japan. The Sony Store Ginza is located in the building with the Nissan showroom, the San-ai Building built by Kiyoshi Ichimura, the founder of Ricoh, is on the other side of the street (currently being rebuilt as of 2024), and diagonally across the street is Wako, the independent retail arm of the watch company Seiko.
In this way, Mitsukoshi is the only department store in an industry in decline. When the day comes when the department store industry dies out, this Yonchome site may well be occupied by a company from a newly emerged industry.
