While looking at Google Maps, the train stopped at a place where we were almost at our destination station. The doors were still open, and if I had wanted to get off, I could have done so at any time. In fact, the men I had seen earlier, who I assumed had gotten off voluntarily, were walking along the side of the tracks, heading somewhere.
There was something fascinating about the unusual experience of getting off a train at a place that was not a station. I would be lying if I said it did not seem appealing. But what should I do once I got off the train? As a non-local, I didn't even know where I could get off the train and onto a normal road. Thinking about this, I just stared at the door.
At that moment, a train heading in the opposite direction approached on the next rail. There was no hesitation in its speed. What would happen if there were people walking on the tracks? In Japan, the train would have stopped immediately and safety checks would have been made. However, this does not seem to be the case here. I remembered that there are many train accidents in Mumbai, and I thought I understood why.
