The doors of suburban trains running in Mumbai do not close. Therefore, it is possible to get off a moving train at your own risk at a place that is not a station. It would be difficult to jump off a train running at high speed, but it is not so difficult when the train is running slowly. In particular, if the train is traveling at low speed before entering a station, it may be the perfect time to get off.
Again, I looked out the window of the train as it came to a stop just before the terminal station and saw several men walking along the side of the tracks. They were not wearing helmets or carrying construction tools. They did not appear to be maintenance workers. If they were, they must have been people who got off the train voluntarily, having decided that getting off before the station would get them closer to their destination.
They were walking leisurely, as if it were a natural thing to do. I watched them and thought it was a strange sight. For them, this freedom to get on and off the train is part of the Mumbai train system, part of their daily routine.
