Sometimes it is hard to believe in what was once the norm when things have changed, even though it didn't seem like it at the time. For example, there was a time when it was acceptable to smoke cigarettes at your desk at work. The structure of train stations is another example for me.
In the old days, there were no platform doors, and express trains passed through the platforms at breakneck speed. That was a very common sight. Nowadays, however, most stations in Tokyo are equipped with platform doors, and the speed of trains is rarely seen. Perhaps because of this, I feel somewhat intimidated when a train passes by at considerable speed at a station without platform doors.
When I think back to the days when it was normal for trains to run right next to the platform, I realize that my senses have changed. I thought about this again as I rode a suburban train in Mumbai. The trains in Mumbai have long cars. Therefore, even if the train is not only passing through a station, the rear cars run through the station with great force. The wind pressure and the speed of the train made me shudder. This would have been normal in the past.
But change, without our knowing it, changes the standards of our senses. What would my old self think of my current senses? It was a little strange, and a little interesting, to think about it.
