The long train was moving slowly toward the Galle station. When I looked at the car windows of the train, all of them were open. There was no air conditioning on the train, probably because it was too hot. In the first place, there might not have been any window glass in the first place. The doors to the boarding and exiting gates at both ends of the train were also open.
Those who thought they were open because the train was approaching the station were naive. Here in Sri Lanka, as in India and Myanmar, the doors to the boarding gates do not close even when the train is running. Coming from a country where train doors are closed when the train is in motion, it feels dangerous, but for those who have only ridden on such trains, it is normal for the doors to be open. Everyone seemed to take it for granted.
