Suburban trains connecting the center of Mumbai with the suburbs had women-only cars, just as in Japan. Next to the boarding gate, “Women Only” was written in English, Hindi, and Marathi. A pictogram was also drawn next to it. This may be a device unique to India, a multilingual society. The pictograms are intended for people who do not understand the language or who are illiterate, and the pictograms convey the intention at a glance.
Even a Japanese person like me could easily understand that this was a women-only car by looking at the sign. This is thanks to the English and pictograms. However, one thing I did not understand was whether this was the case all day long or only at certain times of the day.
