The Nagareyama Line, which connects Mabashi in Matsudo City to Nagareyama in Nagareyama City, is a very short line, only 5.7 kilometers long. However, its history spans more than 100 years, and although the line has been in operation since 1916, when it carried not only passengers but also soy sauce and mirin (sweet sake) produced in Nagareyama, it is now just a two-car train that runs at a leisurely pace. The station facilities are old-fashioned, and just getting from Mabashi Station on the JR Joban Line to Mabashi Station on the Nagareyama Line is a retro single-track railroad that makes you feel like you have traveled back several decades in time.
There are no single-track railways in the area where I live, so I always feel like I am on a trip when I encounter a single-track railroad. As soon as I boarded the train from the platform and started to travel along the single-track line, my travel mood increased even more and reached its climax at Koganejoshi Station. This station is the only island-type platform on the line, where trains going in opposite directions pass each other. When the train stopped at Koganejoshi Station, I got off the platform and looked at the train coming from the opposite direction, even though I had nothing to do. This is the best part of single-track railways.
