A young mother with a nose piercing was holding a baby with a pitch black bindi
A young mother with a pierced nose stood on the side of the road in Malda. In her arms was a baby with a pitch-black bindi between its eyes. I had always imagined the color of bindis to be bright red, but it seems that some bindis are black. When I pointed my camera at the mother and child, the mother smiled at me, but the baby didn't seem to understand what was going on.
The mother looks very young, probably not even 20 years old. The average age of marriage in India is very young compared to Japan and other developed countries. The average age of first marriage in India is around 18 years old.
