The deity of Yushima Tenjin is, of course, Michizane Sugawara. Since Michizane Sugawara is the god of learning, many students visit the shrine during the exam season to pray for success. That much I can understand, but I don't understand how a talented government official, no matter how cursed, came to be worshipped as a god of learning. Perhaps he needed a suitable title to be worshipped, and that title was learning. It's a mystery that I don't understand as much as the fact that Guan Yu, who used to be the god of war, somehow became the god of commerce.
It was not exam season at that time, but there were a lot of worshippers in the precincts of the shrine, and since it was November, they seemed to be visiting for the Shichigosan Pilgrimage. Many people bring their children with them to worship. Incidentally, there is a popular theory that the Shichigosan festival started as a prayer for the health of Tokugawa Tokumatsu, the eldest son of Tokugawa Tsunayoshi.
