As its name suggests, Yushima Tenjin is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning. Many students come here to pray for success in entrance examinations. When I visited, the examination season was already over and the shrine was crowded with visitors who came to thank the god. Many of the ema (votive picture tablet) votive tablets on the shrine's grounds were inscribed with messages such as "I was accepted to XX high school" or "I was accepted to XX university.
But not all of them came to thank. There was also a wedding ceremony taking place in the hall of worship. As I stood at the foot of the bridge next to the shrine building, a bride and groom who had just finished their wedding ceremony and their attendants came across the small wooden bridge.
