Leaving the Phra Sumen Fortress in Bangkok, I soon entered a nearby residential area. This area inside the fort was most likely an old neighborhood. However, none of the buildings standing in line were very old. In contrast to these relatively new buildings, the alleyway had an old-fashioned look to it. They were arranged in a haphazard fashion, like a maze. The streets were not laid out in a grid, and it was not clear if the alleyway leads to somewhere else. The fact that the streets are laid out like this is a testament to the ancient history of this area. And it's easy to get lost while walking, just like walking through the alleys of the old cities of Morocco and Nepal. But from my point of view as a stroller, it's fun.
As I was doing so, I saw a woman coming from across the wet alleyway. She must be local because she was walking her dog. As I stopped at the side of the alley, the woman walked past me with her dog and disappeared down the alley. Watching her, I realized for the first time that this alleyway was the one I could get out of.
