The precincts of Enyu-ji Temple, located in a residential area, are not very large, so it is not long before I finish my walk. After seeing the Shakado Hall, designated as a National Important Cultural Property, and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere that pervades the temple grounds, I decided to go outside. I passed through the Nio-mon Gate and proceeded along the approach to the temple. Then, I saw a dog sitting there.
Tied to the railing, the dog was sticking out its tongue and looking happily toward the main hall. It seemed to be waiting there for its master to finish praying. Even when I stood in front of the dog to block his gaze, he did not look at me. He seems to be very fond of his master and is waiting for his master to come back. He is not looking at me, whom he does not know who I am, who suddenly appeared in front of him.
Beyond the dog, a narrow approach to the temple stretches straight ahead, and at the end of the approach stands a gate, said to have been built in the Edo period. The dog sitting in the middle of the approach looked like a guardian dog protecting the approach from evil.
