Every time I visit a hot country, the same thought crosses my mind—how do dogs with thick fur endure this heat?
The truth is, they probably don’t endure it in the way we imagine. They simply have no choice. Unlike humans, dogs don’t have sweat glands on their skin, so instead, they pant, tongues hanging out as they struggle to regulate their body temperature. If people can suffer from heatstroke, surely dogs are just as vulnerable.
While walking through a shopping street in Mumbai, I suddenly felt a gaze on me. I turned to look and found a dog staring intently in my direction. It had nestled itself among a clutter of goods, tucked away in the shade of a sun umbrella—perhaps the coolest spot it could find.
There was something almost deliberate about the way it had positioned itself, as if it had claimed that little pocket of shade as its own private refuge. And from its spot, undisturbed, it quietly watched me, just as I had been watching it.
