Mukojima Hyakkaen quietly exists in the middle of a residential area. The garden has been in existence since the Edo period. It is not a very large site, but it is filled with a variety of plants. It was a nostalgic, yet slightly mysterious space. The highlight of the garden is said to be the autumn bush clovers. There is even a place in the garden called “Hagi Tunnel".
This is the “Hagi Tunnel. The bamboo framework in the photo is said to be the tunnel. However, it was unfortunately out of season when we visited, and the important bush clovers were nowhere to be found. Instead, only the framework was exposed and seemed to be somewhat unreliably supporting the sky.
The tunnel is slightly crooked. Because of this, for a moment it seemed to go on forever. But in reality, it was not very long. As I stared at it with my camera ready, a figure appeared at the exit on the other side. I clicked the shutter, and the shadow suddenly disappeared. It was as if nothing had happened.
