The Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, located in Yebisu, is an art museum that, as its name suggests, houses a collection of images. The collection includes not only works by leading Japanese artists such as Nobuyoshi Araki, Shoji Ueda, Ihei Kimura, and Daido Moriyama, but also works by foreign artists such as Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and August Sander. What is somewhat surprising is that, despite the name of the museum, it houses not only photographs but also videos. The first floor of the museum has a hall called the "Museum of Photography Movie Theater" (experimental theater), where movies are also shown.
The most surprising facility in the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum is the library on the fourth floor. While it is not unusual for art museums to have a reference room, in most cases it is not open to the general public, whereas the library here is open to anyone free of charge. The collection here includes not only textual information, such as books on photographic criticism, photographic history, and visual history, but also photographic collections. In other words, visitors can browse the world's most famous photo book collections for free. The only problem is that most of the visitors come here to view the exhibited works. Once you have had your fill of looking at the works on display, the library on the fourth floor will completely slip from your mind, making it difficult to visit.
