As I walked up the lawn with the playground equipment, an odd building awaited me at the top of the hill. It is a large, old building with three towers rising above it. The building looks disturbing as it looks down from the top of the hill with round windows like eyeballs. If it were in a movie, it would definitely be a den of evil. But there is no way to see what is inside. I cannot enter the structure and can only look at it from the outside.
This mysterious structure stands in Yokohama's Negishi Forest Park and is called the former Negishi Racetrack Grandstand. As the name suggests, it is a place to watch horse races. Negishi Forest Park is a park built on the site of the former Yokohama Racecourse, and the former Negishi Racetrack Grandstand is a remnant of its spectator stands. The reason why there are no spectator stands to be seen on the structure in the photo is because the photo was taken from the outside of the racetrack, and the seats should still be there on the back side of the racetrack. The reason I cannot be certain is that I cannot go around to the other side of this building.
The Yokohama Racecourse, which was located on high ground, was confiscated by the Ministry of the Navy at the beginning of World War II in 1942 because it overlooked the military port of Yokosuka. After the war ended, the area was confiscated by the U.S. military, and although the part that was released from confiscation is now Negishi Forest Park, the area opposite the former Negishi Racetrack Grandstand is still managed by the U.S. Navy Yokosuka Base Command in Japan, and is not accessible to the general public. Although I came here only to see a modernization heritage site, I unexpectedly came into contact with another part of modern history.
