Walking down a street lined with old low-rise houses in Tainan, I found myself in a peaceful residential neighborhood. At first glance, it seemed to be a quiet street lined with only houses, but upon closer inspection, one could see that several houses were in business. The occasional signage was a silent testament to this.
The sign in the photo was one such find. Small and inconspicuous, it had something written on it in neat Chinese characters. Reading it, it seems to be a store that fixes clothes. However, there is no flashy advertisement or conspicuous decoration, and the sign is discreetly displayed under the eaves of the roof. There is a telephone number, but the shop seems to be known only to those in the know. This place must be familiar to the locals.
Perhaps this is the kind of hidden craftsman's house that neighbors turn to when they are in need. Although they don't push their business interests to the forefront, they must have been supported by the locals with their solid skills. The quietness of the street and the unassuming appearance of the sign gave me a strange sense of warmth.
