A man was sitting on the eaves of a house in the village of Bangaan. He was covered in sweat and looked a little tired, as if he had just finished his work. As I had seen just a few moments earlier, harvested ears of rice were being dried in the sun, and in a village deep in the mountains surrounded by terraced rice fields, farming is the sole occupation. But farming is hard work. Because there is little flat land, it is difficult to introduce farming machines and other equipment, and machinery has not progressed. As a result, cows are still used in place of machines, and much of the work is done by hand.
