I was trudging through the village of Bangaan, tucked away in the northern highlands of Luzon, the Philippines, with steps that felt heavier than the humid air itself. Before me lay the famous rice terraces, a landscape burdened by the grandiloquent title of a World Heritage site. They call these steep stone embankments the "Stairway to Heaven," and while the view is undoubtedly spectacular, the reality of navigating them is far less divine. My knees were trembling, and a crude, greasy sweat poured from my brow. As my heart rate spiked, I began to suspect that "approaching heaven" was simply a euphemism for the physical collapse these slopes demand.
I soon encountered a man sitting under the eaves of an aging stilt house. He appeared to have just finished his labor, drenched in sweat and wearing an expression of profound, almost comical exhaustion—as if his soul had wandered off and forgotten to return. He was the very picture of earnest fatigue.
Nearby, bundles of harvested rice were laid out to dry in the sun—the spoils of a struggle he had likely been engaged in until moments ago. Life in this mountain village is almost entirely defined by such grueling farm work. While rice is the staple of the Filipino diet—with a per capita consumption that puts Japan’s to shame—growing it on this precipitous terrain strikes me as an act of borderline madness. Because level ground is a rare luxury here, the introduction of modern agricultural machinery remains a pipe dream; the conveniences of civilization simply refuse to climb these slopes.
The result is a reliance on the "Carabao," the water buffalo that remains the primary engine of production. These beasts appear deceptively sluggish, yet they are capable of charging at nearly 50 kilometers per hour. A terrifying thought, really—should a buffalo decide to find its top speed on these narrow terraces, both man and beast would be sent hurtling into the abyss of the valley floor.
