I had been walking along the main street for a while, so I decided to change my mind and veer off to a side street. The road I stepped onto was narrow and stretched through a residential area.
They say that the city of Jakarta is badly congested with traffic, but I have a feeling that this is a structural problem. While there are large streets with two or three lanes running through the city, they often turn into narrow alleys where cars cannot pass as soon as they veer off into side streets. The same was true of the street I was walking on at this time. Just a short distance from the main street, the road is only wide enough for people to pass each other, and cars, even small Bajajs, can't get through. This is why all cars will only drive on the main street. As a result, traffic jams will occur on the main streets.
However, there is also a good side to this. Because of this, the alleys in the residential area are quiet and relaxed. People are chatting in the alleys, and cats are laying on the streets. The alley, with only the occasional motorcycle passing by, must be a comfortable place for both people and cats.
