A bearded man was sitting on the edge of Durbar Square in Patan. He had a pattern on his forehead and a trident in his hand. From the looks of it, the man appeared to be a Hindu practitioner called a sadhu.
But what is the real story? Is a sadhu, whose goal is to attain final liberation through meditation, really relaxing at a tourist attraction? I heard that there is a tourist sadhu who makes a living by having tourists take his picture for the money. This man was very friendly and asked me to take his picture. I was suspicious. I could smell the scent of a tourist sadhu. His appearance might be a mere tool for business rather than for training.
