Shiodome, where Hamarikyu Gardens is located, has been redeveloped in the past decade, and several modern high-rise buildings have been built around the garden. Considering that Hamarikyu was originally a villa of the Tokugawa family and a pond was built for duck hunting, it must have been a place where nature remained in abundance away from Edo Castle, the center of power when it was built. But as time passed and Edo expanded to become Tokyo, the Hamarikyu area seems to have been swallowed up by the center of Tokyo. Even when walking in the park, skyscrapers are always in sight somewhere.
The same was true when I was walking along this path. The skyscrapers were towering over the trees growing beyond the lawn, and they were inevitably in my sight. At least I don't find the busyness of being crammed into a building here. No matter where I look around the park, nothing reminds me of work deadlines. The air was tranquil, and a mother and her young child in a wide-brimmed hat were enjoying a picnic on the grass.
