Although it has become a tourist destination, not everyone who visits Bangkok's Chinatown is a tourist. Daily necessities and food items for locals are also sold. In such a situation, a woman was selling lottery tickets. It was something that tourists could buy, but it would be the locals who would buy it.
The woman had set up a table at the edge of the sidewalk and was waiting for customers to arrive. The table was filled with small pieces of paper. These pieces of paper were lottery tickets. The price per piece is 80 baht, and the maximum prize is 6 million baht. These lottery tickets seem to be popular in Thailand and are sold everywhere in town.
As a lottery ticket, the expected return is lower than the 80 baht selling price. For this reason, lotteries are often referred to as a tax on the poor. If one were to make a rational decision, one could save money by not buying lottery tickets, but the popularity of lotteries suggests that Thais, like people in other countries, do not act rationally. Eighty baht is the price to pay for a temporary dream.
