Walking around My Tho, I noticed many houses with their doors left open. This is partly because it is a safe place to live, but also because it is hot and they want to keep their houses as cool as possible. Air conditioners are not common here. The only way to make the house a little cooler is to leave the front door wide open.
A house I was passing at the time had its door open, and a barefooted boy was sitting on the front porch. It was hot, and he was playing while sitting pitched on the stone floor so that he could cool off a little. A wooden stick was placed haphazardly at his feet. The boy seemed to have chosen to sit down on the pitched floor to cool off rather than play with the wooden stick.
