I crossed a small bridge over a pond and stepped into the village of Thanlyin. There were rows of modest houses with alleys running between them. According to my hazy memory, there were no houses standing here when I visited Thanlyin eight years ago. Perhaps Thanlyin has developed and the population has increased.
Whether this memory is correct or not, what was in the air in this village was a sense of tranquility. The residents were taking it easy. When I walked around the village, I met people who were taking it easy, but when they saw me with my camera, they did not react in an exaggerated manner. They just look at me with a camera and don't react in an exaggerated way.
It was the same with the girl and boy I found in the alley. They didn't make a fuss when they saw me, and went on with their daily lives as if nothing had happened. The girl was sitting on the porch, and the boy standing in front of her was showing her something. This was no time to be dealing with a strange foreigner. But fortunately or unfortunately, the girl did not seem to like what the boy was showing her, and she gave him a pensive look. The boy seems to have failed to attract the girl's attention. Hang in there, boy!
