The first thing that struck me when I arrived in Taiwan was how many people were wearing masks. When I boarded the MRT from Taoyuan Airport to the THSR Taoyuan Station, I noticed that many passengers were wearing masks. Those who were not wearing masks were clearly in the minority, and as I did not have a mask with me, I was a bit puzzled. Although the threat of the covid-19 has not disappeared, it seems that the COVID-19 pandemic, which is considered somewhat of a thing of the past in Japan, is still very much alive and well in Taiwan.
Many people working in the local markets and shoppers were wearing masks. However, this did not mean that masked police would appear out of nowhere and question me about my blunder. I was just reminded of the different situation from Japan. In Taiwan, the “mandatory wearing of masks in medical institutions and welfare facilities for the elderly” was abolished and changed to a recommendation in May 2024. It seems that Taiwan, which has minimized the spread of infection through the efforts of Audrey Tan and others, still continues to pay attention to the threat of the covid-19.
