Although Kaohsiung Port, one of Taiwan's representative harbors, is still active, parts of it are showing colors that are difficult to imagine from the port's rugged image. The old warehouse district has been renovated and turned into a place for artists and students to present their works, transforming it into a major center of Kaohsiung tourism. The photo above is an artwork that was placed in the Pier-2 Art Center. Two dolls are sitting on the eaves of an old warehouse, relaxing and doing nothing. The name of the work is “Sitting here, doing nothing.” Juan Juan Bao, wearing a red hat while declaring that he does nothing, seems to be enjoying himself. It has a relaxing flavor.
On the wall of the warehouse where the two dolls are sitting is a large sign that reads “Taisugar” (Taiwan Sugar). From a Japanese point of view, one might think that the name refers to Taiwan Sugar Corporation, which was established in Taiwan during the Japanese occupation, but considering the time period, it was probably the successor company, Taiwan Sugar Corporation, which was established after the war. Today, when we think of Taiwan, we think of TSMC, FOXCONN, ASUS, BenQ, and other precision machinery companies, but in the past, sugar manufacturing was an important industry in Taiwan, and Taiwan Sugar was the largest company in Taiwan. Although the sugar industry has declined, Taiwan Sugar Corporation has successfully diversified its business, operating in tourism, flower cultivation, biotechnology, and retail. They are still the largest landowner in Taiwan and own land all over Taiwan.
