When you go to Taiwan, it is a waste to have breakfast at the hotel. This is not to say that hotel food is bad. There are hotels that serve delicious breakfasts. The reason why I still think you should have breakfast outside the hotel is simply because breakfast in Taiwan is delicious. Unlike Japan, Taiwan has a thriving restaurant culture for breakfast, and there are many places around town that offer inexpensive and delicious breakfasts waiting for travelers. Of course, such restaurants open early in the morning and offer a wide variety.
Breakfast in Chinese culture is usually porridge or Doujia (fresh soy milk), but my favorites are Baozi and dumplings, which do not look like breakfast. On this day, too, I did not look for breakfast at the hotel, but headed for Tangbao (soup-filled steamed buns) store in town. I was excited to see the steam rising from the large steamer baskets steaming in the storefront. Like other stores, this shop sold not only Baozi, but also baked cakes, Youtiao (long golden-brown deep-fried strip of wheat flour dough), and Danbing (egg pancake). Even though the menu is extensive, there is a limit to how much I can eat. Whenever I come to Taiwan, I have a hard time deciding what to eat in the morning.
