I passed through a narrow alleyway where motorbikes were passing by, and ended up in a plaza-like area behind the Kanoman Market in Cirebon. There was a mosque and some food stalls in front of it, so it had all the potential to be a crowded place, but at this time it was quiet. There was no one inside the mosque during the non-prayer hours, and no one was enjoying their meals at the stalls.
As I walked out of the modest mosque, I saw a mother and daugther on a motorcycle approaching. It was the parent and child in this photo. The mother was wearing green and the little girl was wearing a bright red hijab. I prepared myself for the questions they would ask me as they approached, and sure enough, they spoke to me. Where are you from? The mother asked me in English.
I replied, "From Japan," and they seemed satisfied. I wondered if they were quizzing each other on what country I was from. I couldn't understand why they looked so happy, so I pointed my camera at them in return, and they happily agreed. The girl was looking straight at the camera, while her mother was a little embarrassed.
