It's hard to believe now, but there used to be a forestry testing center in Rinshi No Mori Park. Because it was a forestry testing center, it was not a facility where you could just shake a test tube inside a building. It was an institution where various trees were actually planted and where research on forestry was conducted.
The Meguro Experimental Nursery, the forerunner of the Forestry Experiment Station, was established in this area in 1900. This area, which is now a densely populated residential area, was once a countryside of rice fields. There was even a horse race track right next to the forestry experiment station, which may give you an idea of the atmosphere.
The test site was closed in 1978 due to the wave of urbanization. The test site itself was moved to Tsukuba City and became the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute. The former site was developed into a park and opened to the public in 1989, where it remains to this day.
The Rinshi No Mori park is now a place of relaxation for the local residents. The park is not that big, so there are not many people who come all the way from far away, but it is not so small that the park is crowded either. It's just the right balance. On this day, the park was just as busy as ever, and a girl was happily running through the trees that had been there since it was a forestry experiment station.
