It is fun to visit markets when traveling. While places that have become tourist attractions are interesting, markets that offer a glimpse into the lives of the locals are even more so. Moreover, as information on the Internet becomes more complete, it is becoming easier and easier to check out markets that are not listed in guidebooks. It's a convenient world we live in now. At the Gongyou Guomin Market in Kaohsiung, where I stopped by on this day, most of the food sold was fresh food, and the shoppers were all locals. It was a local market without a doubt.
What is interesting about visiting a local market in Taiwan, which is described as a traditional market, is that you can often see people making prepared foods. While it is nice to see fruits and other ingredients that one does not see in Japan, it is even more enjoyable to see people making meat wraps and dumplings. The way they wrap the ingredients one after the other in front of the pile of filling ingredients with a skillful hand can only be described as craftsmanship. Unfortunately, I am in the middle of my trip. No matter how delicious the dumplings looked, if they were not steamed, they were just lumps. Since I could not take the dumplings home and steam them, I had to give up buying them wrapped by the cheerful lady.
