I came here without thinking, and it happened to be the day of the kagura dedication. In the kaguraden, a kagura hall in a corner of the shrine grounds, were adults with kagura flutes and other instruments, and girls in white coats and red hakama with gold crowns on their heads, holding a bundle of offerings in their right hand and a bell in their left. The Nogi Jinja Shrine in Nogi Town, Tochigi Prefecture, was dedicated to the Gogyo no Mai (Five Elements of Dance). The Gogyo no Mai is one of the 12 Taikagura dances performed by the gods who possess the spiritual power necessary for the creation of heaven and earth and the creation of various things on the earth.
For reasons unknown, of the 12 dances, only the Gogyo no Mai has not been performed for the past 100 years or so. Since it had ceased to be performed 100 years ago, there must be almost no photographic or video recordings of it. It must have been a difficult task to revive it. There is a limit to what you can do even if you refer to the legends. If one thinks about it wickedly, the Five Elements Dance, which ceased to exist 100 years ago, and the Five Elements Dance that has been revived and dedicated may be two different things. Well, only the five gods of dance, Takamimusubinokami, Kamimusubinokami, Amenotokotachinokami, Kunitokotachinokami, and Umashikabihikojinokami, know the truth.
