There was a peaceful atmosphere in the residential neighborhood I stepped into in Thanlyin. Even when walking down narrow alleys that would be difficult to navigate even with a bicycle, the sound of engines could not be heard. There were no cars or even bicycles running, and all you could hear were the sounds of local people going about their daily lives. However, people do not live noisily, so even though the area is densely populated with houses, it is still quiet.
The woman in the photo was one of those quietly passing the time in the alley. She was sitting on the front porch of her house, not doing anything. She was so still that I did not notice her sitting there until I came in front of her. In contrast to me, she seemed to have noticed my approach a while ago and was not surprised when I stopped in front of her. It was as if she had expected this to happen.
The woman whose gaze was fixed on the camera had not only her face but also her arms covered with a thick layer of Thanaka. Thanaka is said to be used as a sunscreen as well as a cosmetic, but from the way the woman was applying it, it appeared that she was not using it as a cosmetic. She had applied it thickly to block out the sun's rays as much as possible, and as a result, the brush marks were visible all over her body.
