I came to the edge of a dense residential area. There was a big street running across it, and no more houses. The dense residential area of Jakarta that I had wandered into was a small one that I would soon run out of time to walk around.
There was a battered old wooden bench on the corner of the street. A girl clad in red was sleeping on it. The girl, who had taken off her sandals and was lying on her face, seemed to be unfaithful and was lounging there. But that didn't mean that she was sulking in her own world. Her eyes were on the street. Maybe she was looking for someone to play with. In the meantime, a strange foreigner came into the girl's sight.
The girl's eyes were glued to the foreigner holding a camera. Maybe the foreigner was unusual, or maybe the camera was unusual. Either way, she laid down on the bench and stared at me. When I approached her and pointed my camera at her, she did not raise her head. But her gaze remained fixed straight on me. I didn't think it's that unusual to see a foreigner with a camera, not even deep in the jungle, but in this girl's eyes, I might have looked like a rare animal.
