As I continued walking through the fishing village on the outskirts of Mumbai, the sense of being in a traditional fishing community seemed to fade—until boats reappeared once again. Alongside the road, a small rowboat had been pulled ashore, with fishing nets casually draped over it, as if to remind passersby that this was, indeed, still a fishing village.
I recalled taking a photograph 14 years ago of a fisherman sitting by the roadside, carefully mending his nets. But today, there were no such figures in sight. The nets were there, yet no one was tending to them. Perhaps at this time of day, the priority wasn’t repairing fishing gear but rather enjoying a quiet moment with a fresh juice from a nearby stand.
Life in the village seemed to move in rhythm with the ebb and flow of the sea.
