In a quiet fishing village on the fringes of Mumbai, I made my way toward the shore. Unlike the pristine white beaches of tourist destinations, this coastline was rugged and strewn with scattered stones. As I followed a narrow path leading to the sea, the sound of waves grew louder, and soon, beached fishing boats came into view.
These boats were in a state of decay—weathered and worn, as if they had long since retired from the sea. Their paint had peeled away, their wooden hulls bearing the marks of relentless exposure to the elements. They no longer looked seaworthy; instead, they seemed to rest here, slowly succumbing to time and neglect. This place felt less like a working harbor and more like a graveyard for boats that had fulfilled their purpose.
Yet, as I turned my gaze toward the open water, the contrast was striking. Out in the distance, numerous fishing boats still floated, gently rocking with the waves—vessels still very much alive, carrying on the work that these abandoned ones had left behind.
