In Shanghai, there are back alleys called lilong (里弄), which are located one street off the main streets. There are housing complexes and local people living there, giving the area a local atmosphere.
As I was walking along one of the lilong, I saw a man and a woman drying their laundry in the alley using long sticks. I guess the two people in the photo are not the only ones drying their clothes. The street was so full of laundry that passersby had to walk under it. With so much laundry hanging on the street, it looks just like the lanterns used to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Unlike lanterns, however, drops of water drip from the laundry.
