Many carrying shrines were parading down the streets of Machiya because of a festival. And they stopped to rest sometimes. It was heavy to carry. It is said that a carrying shrine usually weighs over 500 kilos. And some heavy shrines weigh about a ton. So people carry in rotation.
During the shrines stopped, those who carried the long pole with a lantern also stopped in the middle of the street. The two men in this photo were also stopping. And they were waiting for parading down again while they had nothing to do. One man was looking up at the top of the pole.
