The center of Yangon is bustling with activity. Many people were passing through the streets and many stalls were set up along the edges of the wide streets. The woman in the photo, wearing a hair band, was one of the workers at one of the stalls. She was selling cigarettes from a small stand on the side of the road.
If you look closely at the smiling woman's face, you can see what looks like brush marks on her cheeks. This woman was also applying thanaka. In Myanmar, many people, whether men, women, children, or the elderly, go out with thanaka on their faces. I was quite surprised when I first saw people with thanaka on their faces, as this is a custom that I have not seen in other countries. But people are very adaptable. After a while, I did not think anything of it.
