Entering Shinjuku Gyoen from the direction of Shinjuku Station, you will find a French-style garden at the far end. Avenues lined with plane trees give the garden a European appearance. The benches placed along the tree-lined avenue also give it a European flavour. It is hard to believe that this used to be the former residence of the Naito family, who were vassals in the Tokugawa shogunate.
Many people like to spend time relaxing on this tree-lined avenue. I wanted to sit down too, but the benches were occupied by couples. Someone was sitting on every bench, and there was nowhere for me to sit down.
