Shinjuku Gyoen Park is a large national park that straddles the wards of Shinjuku and Shibuya in Tokyo. During the Edo period, Shinjuku Gyoen was a wooded area on the Musashino plateau, where the Naito family, the heads of the Shinshu (Nagano) clan, used to live. At that time, the park was connected to the Tamagawa waterway and was called Tamagawa-en.
