The first place I visited in Mumbai, India, after an absence of 14 years, was Dhobi Ghat. This is a public outdoor laundry where so much laundry is handled that it is said to be βwhere all the laundry in Mumbai gathers". Some say it is the largest outdoor laundry in the world. I had visited this place 14 years ago, but I was curious to see how these public laundry facilities were doing in the affluent India. Although I did not check it out properly, it seems that a large amount of laundry is washed here, just as it used to be. The laundry ropes that run around the vast grounds were lined with freshly washed laundry.
Still, as I looked out from the observation deck, I noticed a few things that had changed. If I remember correctly, the skyscrapers rising over Dhobi Gart were not there 14 years ago. When I was here before, there was no observation deck, and I could only see the inside of the building from the overpass. Not satisfied with that, I went inside the Dhobi Ghat. Fourteen years is a long time. Fourteen years is a long time. It seems that nothing has changed, but it has.
